Mary 2I grew up poor, the only daughter, and third child, of a mother and father that gave all they could just to put food on the table. At the end of the day, they were exhausted and had nothing more to give to my brothers and me.

My parents’ actions demonstrated to me that you had to work hard. “Anything worth having requires hard work!” they told us. And if you want to do better – you had to work even harder to get ahead in life.

Taking that lesson to heart, I worked hard, both at school and home, and achieved a full academic scholarship to Marquette University. Leveraging my “smarts” and my tenacity I grasped for security the best way I knew how –by working long and hard, pushing and keeping my nose “to the grind stone.”

All I wanted was a long-term, secure corporate career with interesting work. To be better off than my parents. I expected I’d receive acknowledgement and appreciation from my superiors and colleagues for all my effort. I looked forward to promotions, acknowledgements and appreciation galore!

I dreamed of achieving that lifelong picture-perfect career followed by an idyllic retirement

The reality was a little different.

For over 20 years, my life became an exercise in navigating the economic twists and turns, office politics, corporate mergers and acquisitions…and business closures. I often joked that I needed an erasable business card, all the while feeling the wear and tear of yet another change without the expected reward.

In spite of the mounting evidence and the many “red flags” warning me my strategy wasn’t working, I kept my head down and continued to believe my hard work and sacrifices would be rewarded. “They have to be,” I thought, “those are the rules of the game. I believed “IF I did good work, IF I did more work, IF I stayed late, IF I was available 24 hours a day, seven days a week

THEN I would get my reward.”

It finally hit me. “THEN” would never come.   That wasn’t how the rules of the game were written. “Then” wasn’t a part of effectively living the life I dreamt of….

I was trapped in a perpetual loop of hard work, frustration, stress, disappointment and unhappiness.

Worse, I was defining success and happiness as something that was in the future. It was something to strive (work hard for) for but always and forever, just out of reach.

I now know those beliefs of “working hard,” “PUSHING” and “DOING whatever it took” to get the praise, reward and security from others were motivated by good intentions, but were ultimately ineffective, unrealistic and self-limiting.

Every time I achieved something, I was afraid I’d lose it – that great job, that promotion, that pay increase, that appreciation.

In an inspiring moment, I realized I needed to CREATE my own happiness and success, and not wait for it to be bestowed upon my by others. And that is what I want FOR YOU.
